Overview

A listed building Edinburgh

Our client initially approached us previously to assist with a phase of works on this prestigious building however our diary and availability didn’t allow us to work together.

Why They Came To Us

Stratum Masonry works on several phases of the building

Since then, over the past couple of years we have been part of this special project which has seen Stratum Masonry works on several phases of the building including maintaining the historic fabric to the building and the boundary walls.

We’ve overcame some challenges on this project, with it being an occupied building of historical importance and working with our client, ensuring they could still hold key stakeholder meetings whilst works were being undertaken.

Our Process

Our first phase of works consisted of repointing works

Our first phase of works consisted of repointing works to the ashlar stonework, using a taped jointed method to ensure no staining of the historical fabric.

Careful removal of historic anchors also formed part of this work package that seen all corrosive and redundant anchors were removed and areas made good.

Our Process

Various masonry items were replaced

There were sensitive repairs also carried out to the caryatids which had suffered contour scaling over the years and whilst scaffold access was in place, our client wanted to ensure these beautiful figures were preserved for many years to come.

Phase two saw Stratum Masonry undertake all stonemasonry works to the boundary walling that surrounded the building and was part of a major overhaul whereby all historic mortars were carefully raked out, replaced with a lime mortar mix. All fractured and eroded masonry was methodically replaced with an agreed stone type.

Results

All new stonework was dressed and carved

All new stonework was dressed and carved by our in-house stonemasons to recreate the details of the historic fabric, which included surface finishes, moulded stonework and ornate cornice works.

Given the scale of the project, Stratum Masonry collaborated closely with our client to ensure deadlines were met, communication was paramount between all contractors on site that allowed us to carefully plan and execute works in a controlled manner whilst the building remained live.
