Stratum Masonry conducted a condition survey of all external fabric consisting of the historic stonework and render.

Why They Came To Us

Our client first approached us in 2020

And wanted the external fabric on this incredible property brought back to life. Stratum Masonry conducted a condition survey of all external fabric consisting of the historic stonework and render.

In order to proceed with the works, our client needed some other works carrying out before we could start on site and this delayed the projects for many months.

Challenges

Stratum Masonry started to erect scaffolds

However in 2023 Stratum Masonry started to erect scaffolds to all 3 nr elevations to this property to undertake a full renovation of the external fabric.

All stonework to the rear elevation was carefully raked out and repointed in a well gauged lime mortar mix.

The front elevation stonework was sympathetically restored to its former glory, utilising new stonework where required along with colour matched stone repairs. During this process we carefully removed all failed linostone coatings to ensure all stonework was able to breathe as it would have done when first constructed.

Our Process

The gable wall was where the majority of the work lay on this project

all cement render had failed and started to detach from the brickwork sub strate. All render was carefully removed and with assistance from SLCT we carried out a 3 coat lime render to area which was finished off with a coloured top coat to blend in beautifully with the stonework located on both elevations.

Our Process

We reinstated a historic wall

Lastly, we reinstated a historic wall that had became dangerous and at risk of collapse, supplying new buff sandstone rubble and copes our Stonemasons were able to recreate the detail and finish to blend in with the historic boundary wall.

Results

Many weeks on site and weekly progress meetings

Our main challenges on this project were ensuring all lime render was able to be carefully applied and carbonate in a controlled environment between each coat and a uniform colour to finish.

After many weeks on site and weekly progress meetings we completed this project for our client and they were delighted with the finished results.
