Why They Came To Us

Why Stratum Masonry Was Trusted to Restore the Buck’s Head Building

Challenges

Key Challenges in a Complex Restoration

The biggest challenge was the level of detail required in reconstructing missing architectural features. Many original carvings and decorative elements had either eroded beyond recognition or were entirely missing, requiring our team to study historic references and carefully replicate them by hand. Additionally, working in a busy city centre location meant logistical constraints, with limited access for scaffolding and equipment. Coordinating the work while minimising disruption to surrounding businesses and pedestrians was a key factor in the project’s planning.

Our Process

Step-by-Step: From Survey to Stonework

We began by carrying out a full stone survey to assess the extent of damage and determine the areas requiring replacement, repair, or recreation. Where stone replacement was necessary, we sourced the best available matching sandstone that was complimentary to the original building fabric.

Our Process

Hand-Carved Precision, Carefully Delivered

The most intricate part of the project involved our stonemasons  carefully hand carving new stone sections to replicate lost historic details Lime pointing was applied across the building to localised areas to prevent water ingress whilst maintaining the building’s breathability and structural integrity. Throughout the project, strict safety and logistical measures were in place to manage work within the constraints of the city centre environment.
