Overview

Helensburgh

Stratum Masonry were first contacted by our client to assist with the restoration of the bay windows to this beautiful home in Helensburgh. After a consultation process and site visit we identified numerous areas needing attention which included the need for stone cleaning, stone replacement and lime pointing works. Over time, weathering and structural movement had caused significant deterioration, with eroded stonework and failing mortar joints.

Why They Came To Us

Trusted Based on Proven Local Work

Our client was concerned about the deteriorating stonework, particularly around the bay windows, where the existing stone had shown significant weathering to the point of requiring full replacement. Our client had found us online and noticed we had carried out similar projects in the area which yielded fantastic results, gave them assurances that we were the right contractor for the project ahead.

Challenges

Restoration Challenges Faced

The most complex aspect of the project was the bay window restoration. The original stone had eroded beyond repair, requiring us to source and cut new sandstone to match the existing detail. Maintaining the structural integrity of the window area while working around the delicate stained glass was also a key challenge. Additionally, given the property’s exposure to coastal weather conditions, the new stonework had to be robust enough to withstand the Scottish weather elements.

Our Process

Careful Repairs, Seamless Integration

We began by carried out a stone condition survey to assess the condition of all existing masonry fabric on the bay window areas, identifying areas that required either repair or full replacement. The most detailed work focused where the damaged stone was carefully removed and replaced with newly carved sandstone. Each section of new stone was shaped and fitted by hand to recreate the original architectural details.

Our Process

Carved by Hand, Rebuilt with Care

We also carried out gentle cleaning of the stonework along with stone repairs and repointed sections of the façade using lime mortar, ensuring the building remained breathable and structurally sound.

Results

Restoration Completed to a High Standard

The restoration works not only improved the structural integrity of the property but also brought back its original character. The newly reconstructed bay window seamlessly blended with the surrounding stonework, preserving the beauty of the stained-glass feature. With fresh lime pointing and newly replacement stonework, the home is now both visually stunning and built to withstand the elements for years to come. The homeowner was thrilled with the transformation.
