Why They Came To Us

Trusted for Our Experience in Historic Restoration

Our client, a commercial business in the construction space, recognised the need for stonework to take place after noticing sections of stonework that were loose and in need of attention. They sought a specialist with experience in traditional stonework who could carry out restoration works while adhering to the logistical constraints of the site location. Stratum Masonry’s expertise in working on historic buildings across Scotland made us the natural choice for the project.

Challenges

Overcoming Site Constraints

The primary challenge was the building’s location. Situated in a tight setting, access to certain areas of the façade was restricted, requiring careful planning for all deliveries including necessary scaffolding and stonework. Additionally, as the property was in active commercial use, work had to be scheduled to minimise disruption to businesses and foot traffic in the area. Sourcing replacement stone that blended well matched the existing structure was another critical factor in maintaining the building’s historic appearance.

Our Process

Precision Craftsmanship from Start to Finish

We began with a thorough survey to assess the extent of deterioration and identify areas where stone replacement was necessary. Our specialist stonemasons then carefully removed damaged stone sections, sourcing and cutting new sandstone to match the original material.

Our Process

Expert Hands, Traditional Methods

Where possible, existing stonework was repaired and preserved rather than replaced. Lime pointing was carried out to ensure the mortar remained breathable and sympathetic to the building’s historic construction.

Results

Restored, Safe, and Seamless

The restoration work revitalised the building’s appearance while making it safe again. The new stone elements blend beautifully with the existing façade, and the lime pointing provided essential protection against the weather elements. Despite the challenges of working in a confined space, the project was completed on schedule with minimal disruption to the client’s operations. Our client was extremely satisfied with the outcome, reinforcing Stratum Masonry’s reputation for delivering high quality stone restoration in even the most challenging environments.
