Overview

Newtonmearns Home

We were approached by the project Architect where their client had purchased a traditionally built stone property and had grand plans for it.

Why They Came To Us

Sections of the house had been carefully taken down

Sections of the house had been carefully taken down and a proposed extension being added with a living quarters and finished off with a swimming pool, gym, and sauna area.

Challenges

Stratum Masonry undertook a full condition survey

Stratum Masonry undertook a full condition survey of all existing stonework to determine its suitability for our client’s grand vision and the buildings current state.

With the condition of the existing sandstone, it was agreed Stratum Masonry were to undertake a full overhaul of 3 elevations of the existing property that would form the entrance to this new home.

Our Process

All stonework was carefully raked out

All stonework was carefully raked out and repointed in a lime mortar mix, significant algal staining was also evident during the initial walk round and it was agreed this would be carefully removed using our superheated water cleaning system.

Our Process

All masonry to the structural openings on this elevation had to be carefully retained

One elevation had been rendered with an insulated render and had started to fail, the stonework underneath had suffered significant alterations and damage over the years because of the render works that were carried out.

All masonry to the structural openings on this elevation had to be carefully retained or replaced, with all new stonework being dressed by our inhouse team of stonemasons.

Results

Stratum Masonry Delivers

This project threw up numerous challenges for our team given the condition of the building, we had to sensitively approach all stone replacement works with due care and attention whilst ensuring all masonry fabric was preserved where possible. Our team managed to gather evidence of the historic finishes that were used when the home was first constructed which allowed our stonemasons to hand carve the details on the new stone that was being installed.
