Why They Came To Us
Why the Homeowner Chose Stratum Masonry
The homeowner wanted to restore the natural beauty of their blonde sandstone home, which had become dulled by pollution and weathering. They also needed advice on their chimney stacks which were giving them cause for concern. Linostone repairs had been carried out historically prior to them owning the home and they were also now showing signs of failure. Sections of the historic fabric were needing attention, and this included the need to replace defective stone features including balusters and other architectural details that had deteriorated over time. With our reputation for traditional masonry skills and attention to detail, Stratum Masonry was chosen to carry out the work.

Challenges
Challenges in Restoring Delicate Stonework
Blonde sandstone is particularly susceptible to staining and weathering, so gentle cleaning methods were required to avoid damaging the historic surface. Additionally, the stone carving and indenting work required templating of all existing details and then applying them to the carefully selected sections of sandstone, this ensures the historic details are matched with the new stonework. The replacement of the stone balusters also required to be carried out in accordance with restoration practices to maintain the home’s original design.
Our Process
Uncovering Beauty Through Skilled Restoration
The first stage of the project involved a specialist stone cleaning process, carefully removing years of built-up dirt, and staining to reveal the natural blonde sandstone, the cleaning process involves low temperate steam which breaks up all surface pollutants safely. We then carried out stone indenting, replacing damaged sections with newly carved stone to match the original detailing. The new stone balusters were handcrafted and installed with precision, restoring the property’s external features. Stone repairs were also completed to areas where deterioration was noted.

Results
A Beautiful Transformation
The work completely transformed the appearance of the home, bringing back the clean look of the blonde sandstone. The intricate stone carving and replacement work matched nicely with the original design. With the new balusters in place, the properties entrance was complete, enhancing both its visual appeal and structural integrity. The homeowner was delighted with the result and have confirmed they will be planning another phase of works to this beautiful home in the future.

Happy to recommend Stratum. We had to wait a while due to their busy schedule, but they took the time to do a thorough survey and quoted with lots of marked up photographs of the job. Now that the replacement step and corbels are in situ it looks great. Extensive repointing also undertaken. Scott, May and team kept us informed throughout and were very personable. Would certainly use again
