Overview

Strathaven Town Mill

Stratum Masonry were instructed to carry out the careful restoration at the historic Strathaven Town Mill. As one of the town’s most iconic buildings, the project focused on carefully taking down the high level masonry and rebuilding using the old historic fabric where possible and replacing defective sections with new sandstone carved to match the original. The significance of the restoration was recognised regionally and featured on STV News, bringing attention to the importance of preserving Scotland’s built heritage.

Why They Came To Us

Restoring a landmark of local heritage with traditional craftsmanship

The original stone façade had slowly deteriorated over time, becoming a problem for our client. They needed a team capable of working with historic stonework and ensuring that the fabric would be handled with due care and attention. Communication was going to be important on this project, ensuring the everyone was kept upto date given it was a building used for local events and home to local clubs too. With our experience in heritage projects and a strong reputation for working on listed buildings Stratum Masonry were chosen to deliver the masonry package.

Challenges

Weathered Stone, Structural Strain, and Limited Access

One of the main challenges was the condition of the original stone sign, which had weathered beyond recognition and required partial replacement. The building itself also showed signs of structural fatigue, meaning the restoration needed to go beyond cosmetic repair and address deeper issues. Access to the Mill also had to be considered. It was situated on a busy main road.

Our Process

How We Restored the Mill

We began by carrying out a full site survey to assess the condition of the stonework and gather photos and measurements. Our stonemasons then set to work carving all new sections of stonework, carefully matching the original lettering style.

Our Process

Traditional Skills, Modern Execution

At the same time, we addressed structural masonry issues by removing decayed stone and rebuilding key areas using compatible natural stone and lime mortar. To protect the building long term, repointed isolated areas of stonework that ensured water ingress issues were addressed.

Results

Preserving Heritage, Earning Headlines

Our client was delighted with the final finish and has brought the building’s identity back to life. The positive public response, along with coverage on STV News, reinforced the value of skilled stonemasonry in protecting Scotland’s historic buildings.
