Overview

Strathbungo

Stratum Masonry were instructed by our clients to restore the sandstone façade of this elegant Glasgow home. Our clients who both work within the construction sector knew the stonework to their home needed attention. Over time, weathering and general wear had led to stone deterioration, with eroded mortar joints and areas of damaged stone requiring replacement. Our work included a full survey, stone replacement, stone repairs, replacement of entrance stairs and lime pointing to preserve the building’s character while improving its longevity.

Why They Came To Us

Proven Experience with Glasgow’s Sandstone Homes

Our clients had concerns about the condition of their property’s stonework, particularly the entrance stairs which were in poor condition with cement repairs now failing. They also observed signs of decay such as cracks, surface erosion, and failing mortar joints. They sought a specialist with expertise in traditional materials and techniques to restore their home without compromising the quality finish. Our reputation for high quality craftsmanship and experience with similar sandstone homes in Glasgow made us the preferred choice for this project.

Challenges

Overcoming Material and Site Constraints

One of the key challenges was ensuring that any replacement stone matched blended well with the existing masonry fabric. The property’s original sandstone had developed a natural patina over time, and it was essential that new materials blended in while providing durability. Additionally, as a residential home, all work had to be carried out with minimal disruption to the occupants and the neighbouring properties.

Our Process

Preserving Stone, Restoring Access

Severely deteriorated stones were carefully removed and replaced with newly sourced sandstone that closely matched the existing façade. Where possible, we repaired and retained the original stonework using specialist techniques to restore its integrity.

Our Process

Restoration with Precision and Purpose

To enhance the longevity of the structure, lime pointing was carried out, ensuring the mortar remained breathable and suitable for the building’s historic construction. The entrance steps were replaced with a new sandstone ensuring that a safe means of access was present and also in keeping with the buildings character.

Results

Enhanced Appearance, Preserved Heritage

The restoration significantly improved the property’s appearance while ensuring the historic fabric was preserved for the future. The carefully selected replacement stone blending well with the existing, and the use of lime mortar provided essential protection against the weather elements. The homeowners were extremely pleased with the final outcome, noting the improvement in both the building’s looks and structural stability. This project stands as another successful example of Stratum Masonry’s expertise in preserving and restoring Scotland’s historic homes.
