Overview

York Street

Stratum Masonry was commissioned to carry out careful restoration of the existing stone fabric which had suffered from numerous fractures and defects at York Street, Glasgow. The project involved implementing essential safety measures, stone replacement, intricate stone carving, lime pointing, and detailed stone repairs to preserve the building’s heritage while ensuring its structural integrity.

Why They Came To Us

Restoring Historic Stonework in the Heart of Glasgow

Our client approached us after significant deterioration in the stonework, including fractured masonry, open beds and joints and structural concerns. Given the location in Glasgow’s city centre, our client required a specialist contractor capable of handling sensitive restoration while maintaining the area’s safety and minimising disruption. Our experience with historic Scottish buildings and our ability to carry out restoration works on listed buildings made us the ideal choice.

Challenges

Navigating Risks, Crowds, and Conservation

Loose and unstable masonry posed a risk to pedestrians and the surrounding environment.

We also had to take into consideration the busy city-centre location, therefore requiring careful planning to manage scaffolding, pedestrian access, deliveries to site and traffic co-ordination.

The building’s historic nature demanded that all repairs align with traditional materials and techniques.

Our Process

Crafting the Restoration, One Stone at a Time

Our initial priority was securing the site, assessing immediate risks, and implementing necessary stabilisation work.

We carefully removed and replaced severely damaged stone while retaining as much of the original fabric as possible.

Our Process

Step-by-Step: From Stabilisation to Perfection

Our skilled craftsmen hand-carved replacement stones to match the building’s original details.

Using traditional lime mortar, we repointed areas of masonry to improve durability while ensuring breathability.

Once all repairs were completed, we carried out a final quality check to ensure the restoration was seamless and the building was structurally sound.

Results

Preserved Heritage, Secured Future

Our work not only restored the building’s original aesthetic but also improved its longevity and safety. The stonework is now structurally secure, the façade retains its historic character, and the use of traditional materials ensures long-term preservation.

The project was completed efficiently, with minimal disruption to the surrounding area, reinforcing Stratum Masonry’s reputation as specialists in historic stone restoration.
