What We Do
So now you know (if you have read our previous blog), where we came from. But do you know what we do? If you don’t, then you’re not alone.
If I asked you what a builder, tiler, roofer, carpenter, joiner, or any of the day to day tradespeople we come across, actually does, then you’d probably have a good idea. Ask them about stonemasonry, and many people simply aren’t sure.
The clue is in the title –
It’s all about the stone.
Stonemasonry is the creation of buildings, structures, and sculpture using stone as the primary material.
In general terms, a stonemason is a person who cuts, prepares, and builds with stone. But we already know it’s so much more than that.
Here at Stratum Masonry, we use a variety of tools and methods
Here at Stratum Masonry, we use a variety of tools and methods. Both traditional and contemporary. You have to respect the ancient techniques (stonemasonry is one of the oldest professions in human history), let’s face it, if the pyramids, Taj Mahal and the Great wall of China are still standing, then you can’t really diss the methods of the old stonemasons! Likewise, you must allow for progress. We are an ever-evolving world and it would be ignorant of us not to keep up to date with new and improved skill sets.
So how do we put these skills to use?
Well, our stonemasons provide a variety of services including stone maintenance, conservation, restoration and building from new.

Our remit covers far too many products and services to discuss in one go, so I’ll break them down into future blogs.
Meanwhile, if there’s anything you want to know about in particular, or you have something you’d like us to blog about, then please get in touch and let us know.
